Recorded Documents
This list may not be exhaustive. It is provided for reference only and is not a substitute for a title search; it does not constitute an opinion of title or ownership.
Tapestry search terms are calculated automatically using the conversion rules described below and should be verified against the actual record. A few record types (for example, mortgages, miscellaneous filings, and land corner records) may use additional letter prefixes not reflected in this calculation.
What do "liber/page" and "document number" mean?
Every document recorded with the Register of Deeds gets an identifier so it can be found again later. Older records use a liber and page number (liber is an old term for a bound record book); newer records use a document number tied to the year they were recorded. Benzie County's Register of Deeds converts liber/page numbers into a standardized format for its electronic search system, Tapestry. The table below shows how each era of records is formatted there.
| Record era | Format used in Tapestry | Example |
|---|---|---|
| 2023 – present | Document number: year, dash, sequence | 2023-00001 (Certificate of Trust) |
| 2004 – 2022 | Document number: year, document-type letter, dash, sequence | 2004R-00001 (Deed) · 2004S-00001 (Survey) |
| Liber 190 – Liber 511 | Put a "1" in front of the liber to make 4 digits, and a "0" in front of the page to make 4 digits | 1190-0001 (Deed, Liber 190 Page 1) |
| Before Liber 190 | Put "DE" and a "0" in front of the liber number | DE0186-0001 (Deed, Liber 186 Page 1) |
Liber / Page
A location in the county's old bound record books — "Liber" (book) and "Page." Used before documents were assigned individual numbers.
Liber 217, Page 698Shown on this site as 217/698.
Document Number
A unique ID assigned to a document at the time it was recorded, usually starting with the year.
2018R-00245The letter (R, S, L, and so on) indicates the type of document — R for a recorded instrument like a deed, S for a survey, L for a land corner record.
Land Corner / Miscellaneous / Mortgage prefixes
Special record types before Liber 190 get their own prefix in front of the liber number.
L · MI · MGExample: a Land Corner record is shown as 1001L-0001; a Mortgage as MG0010-0278.
